THE 'RIP OFF' GALLERY
|
We're concerned about the apparent growing trend of artists
copying photographers' original work and passing it off as their
own - for commercial gain - without seeking permission, or discussing
licencing. We think it's totally unprofessional, and it is illegal.
We're showcasing some of the things we've found.
There has been recent publicity about this in New Zealand,
such as this News
article
|
Photo copied by 'artist' Dana Mihailoff and being
offered for sale in Wellington Airport, NZ. My photo has been
available on my website, and published in calendars. |

We found this painting by chance
in a local newspaper and followed it up. Sonia has since acknowledged
the issue and her mistake, and apologised. She claims that she
was a student and not aware of issues of copyright, and now
that she is aware will not do it again. It begs the question
- what kind of copyright or intellectual rights training do
schools provide to art students? Surely this is an integral
part of their profession? |

| We found this painting
at the 2005 Affordable Art Show in Wellington. The so called
artist Karin Jones appears to have copied this image off
our website with a few changes. A number of artists contact
us for permission to base their work on our images, and
a fair deal developed. No contact was made in this instance,
and no permission was sought. |

| We found this on
the auction website - www.trademe.co.nz. The person admitted
that they had copied my image. After a discussion and actions
taken I've decided not to place their name here, but this
represents another copy of one of my images. May 2006. |

| We found this on the auction
website - www.trademe.co.nz on 30 Aug 2006. The person trading
as 'Kingdomkerry' admitted that they had copied my image,
a photo that has been used in calendars and a book. TradeMe
pulled this painting from their auction site. |
